These
committees support the educational and social needs of the students of
Claxton Elementary.

Character Education
|

|
Each month, Claxton emphasizes a desired
character trait, such as honesty. Volunteers carry out 30 – 60
minute lessons in the classroom dealing with these character
traits. Times are set up with the individual teachers. All
activities are outlined and all materials are provided.

Cultural Arts

|
This committee plans educational events
and programs related to the arts for the students throughout the
year. Events may include scheduling visiting orchestral or musical
performances at the school or art festivals.

Health and Safety
|

|
This committee provides information and
activities that promote safety consciousness and healthy habits –
these include fire prevention, bike safety, healthy eating and dental
hygiene. Includes activities/events that involve Fit Phil,
Claxton’s health “mascot”.

Reading Incentives

|
This committee works with the school in
planning and implementing the school wide reading incentive program, Reading
for the Stars. Includes quarterly celebrations to highlight the
children’s’ accomplishment during the school year and planning the summer
reading program.

Media Center

|
This committee works with the media
specialist to provide students with the time and knowledge to locate
needed materials for both classroom assignments and leisure
reading. Volunteers are welcome throughout the day and are
especially needed between the hours of 7:30–9:00 AM and 1:30–2:10
PM. Duties include helping students locate books, shelving, making
hands-on products for lesson plans, preparing bibliographies, pulling
books for teachers, etc. Volunteers can also help with Book Fair,
author visits and other scheduled activities.

Claxton Orientation

This committee focuses on welcoming
incoming students and their families to Claxton, which includes those who
arrive at the beginning of and during the school year. Involves
Meet and Greet activity prior to the first day of school and Kindergarten
Orientation in March/April, as well as updates throughout the

Student Council Parent Rep
|

|
This parent acts as a liaison between
Student Council and the PTA. Helps coordinate student council
sponsored activities, such as fund-raising events for a specified
charity, coordinates volunteers to help with School Store, and solicits
student council involvement in school events as needed. This
representative is usually a parent of a child on student council.

CMT Representative

|
This individual is a member of the
Claxton Management Team, which is a state-mandated group that includes
representatives from every grade level, support staff, classified staff,
school administration and a parent representative. This parent also
acts as a liaison between the CMT and the PTA by attending PTA Executive
Board meetings. CMT meetings are held twice a month from 2:40 –
4:00. It is recommended that this position be held for two
years. The CMT’s goal is to enhance student achievement.

Grant Coordinator

Responsible for gathering information for
and submitting grant applications that could benefit Claxton’s projects.

Kids Voting

This committee coordinates the Kid’s
Voting Booth at Claxton for the November elections. This involves
distributing information to teachers and families, scheduling volunteers
for that day and setting up/closing down the children’s voting
booth. The chairman is encouraged to attend one training session
that will discuss the Kids Vote procedures. (Oct/Nov)

Science Extravaganza

|
Claxton’s Science Fair is really a
Science Day. The fair centers around a specific theme, such as
“Marble Contraptions”, “Metric Olympics” and “Structures”. Faculty
and students from NC A&T are scheduled to hold workshops and explain
engineering concepts that are particular to that year’s
theme. (Feb/Mar)

Reflections

This is a national PTA-sponsored project
centered around a chosen theme. Students submit entries in various
formats such as visual arts and writing that center around that theme to
be judged. (Nov – Jan)

5th Grade Celebration

|
A fun, one-day event celebrating 5th
grade promotion. This includes a celebration ceremony with a
speaker and an in-school reception. It is recommended that both a 4th
grade and 5th grade parent be involved in the planning and
implementation of this event. (May)

Field Day

|
This is an end of the year, outdoor event
that is coordinated with the Physical Education Department and is done by
grade level. The committee schedules volunteers and offers support
to Ms. Shelton, who oversees this event. (May)

SERVICE

These
committees provide services that support school activities and staff, and
enhance communication between Claxton and families.

Beautification
|

|
Outdoor Beautification works to keep the
outside of Claxton beautiful by regularly scheduled workdays where we can
weed, plant and clean up. In charge of coordinating four (4)
Beautification Workdays in August, October, March and May (recommended
months) and keeping an updated list in the office of ongoing “chores” for
volunteers in between Workdays. Indoor Beautification was added in
2005 to work on updating the interior of Claxton.

Hospitality/Staff Appreciation

This committee schedules and organizes
events to recognize and show appreciation to staff at Claxton
Elementary. Events include the Teacher Appreciation Luncheon in May
and acquiring Teacher Christmas gifts. This committee also supports
other events during the school year if needed.

Good Cheer

|
Good Cheer is responsible for recognizing
and responding to events that affect those who work and volunteer at
Claxton, such as birthdays and illnesses, personal and professional
achievements, etc.

Volunteer Coordinator/Room Representative

|
This position is responsible for
promoting volunteerism, gathering information from willing volunteers and
distributing that information to the various committees. Along with
these duties, the coordinator works with Room Representatives who
organize classroom volunteers and celebrations and who work closely with
the teachers to provide assistance as needed. At times, the
Coordinator may be called on to line up volunteers for specific events.

School Store

Operated in conjunction with Student
Council and with help from staff/parent volunteers, the School Store is
open once or twice a week for students to purchase school supplies.
School Store is open at Meet and Greet prior to the start of
school.

Spring Carnival

Carnival-style, outdoor event that
includes food, games and prizes that is geared toward the entire
family. (May)

Newsletter

|
The Claxton PTA newsletter, Starlines,
is printed on a monthly or bi-monthly basis and is a chief means of
communication about school events.

Yearbook

|
Information is gathered throughout the year on
Claxton students, staff and activities and compiled in classic yearbook
style. Yearbooks are distributed at the end of the school year.

Directory

|
This committee coordinates the gathering
of information and printing of the student directory that is distributed
to students and staff. This information is gathered on a purely
voluntary basis and includes names, addresses, phone and email
information on Claxton students and families. The committee may
solicit ads to offset publication expenses pursuant to committee
guidelines and may sponsor a contest to choose the cover page. Each
year’s directory forms should accompany the Principal’s summer mailing
and a January update is recommended.

This committee is responsible for setting
up and keeping the Claxton web page up to date. The website should
include current copy of the Starlines and links to websites of interest,
such as Kernodle Middle School and Western High School. One of this
year’s goals is the ability to use this website to facilitate mass emails
to Claxton families.

Public Relations

Responsible for contacting newspaper and
media to advertise events or accomplishments at Claxton.
|
|
Bulletin Board

|
Responsible for updating the PTA bulletin
board, the main bulletin board and the large display case. Also
responsible for keeping the PTA trophy case in order.

Wish List

Responsible for coordinating the Wish List
for teachers and staff and keeping the Wish List bulletin board updated
throughout the year.

Advocacy

|
This committee keeps the PTA informed of
political and legislative issues affecting children and youth and attends
meetings/writes correspondence to make Claxton’s views known to the
appropriate officials. It encourages those who are concerned
about certain issues to contact officials via telephone, emails and
letter. The committee should remain up to date on issues that
may/will affect Claxton by attending School Board meetings, reviewing
Friday Notes, and keeping abreast of issues that appear in newspapers or
media. Certain issues may need to be forwarded to chairmen of the
PTA Web Page and newsletter.

Awards

The Awards Committee identifies potential
projects and publications from Claxton for county-wide PTA awards,
compiles and submits the nominated projects for judging. Examples
are PTA Newsletter, special volunteer awards, and Teacher of the
Year. This includes locating award guidelines and soliciting
nominations from PTA members and school staff. (Jan – Mar)

This is an event where children pledge to
walk or run a specified distance in exchange for donations solicited from
relatives, friends and acquaintances. This provides funding for
specified projects. Held in late winter/early spring on alternate

Book Fair

The book fair is held in the fall and
gives the children an opportunity to purchase books, audio materials,
etc. as a fundraiser for the media center with the added benefit of
promoting reading.

Skate Night

This is a scheduled, Claxton
PTA-sponsored night at Skateland USA West. It is normally well
attended and a fun way to support Claxton PTA while getting some
exercise!

Papa John Nights

Papa John’s Pizza and Claxton combine to
raise money on a scheduled evening each month. During the 2004-2005
school year, this occurs on PTA nights, so order out, let them deliver
and join us!

Spirit Sales

This is the sale of Claxton paraphernalia
such as T-shirts, mugs, and pens. These items are displayed on the
rack in the school foyer.

Membership

This committee works to promote
membership in the Claxton PTA and encourage parents and guardians to
become active members through volunteerism. A member of this
committee is responsible for coordinating the PTA Buddies program
throughout the year.
