Reader and Reading Incentive Programs
Reading
Incentive Program
Claxton encourages students to
read daily and record their reading progress using the Reading Incentive
Sheets. The PTA celebrates the progress each quarter by holding a
Reading Incentive Celebration for students who complete at least two
sheets in the quarter. Celebrations include fun activities
and quarterly progress stars. Come join in on the fun (of reading)!

Accelerated
Reader Program
The Accelerated Reader (AR)
Program provides teachers and children a fun and exciting way to promote
reading at home and in the classroom. The Claxton media center has
over 3100 Accelerated Reader books and tests. These books are marked
by an orange circle ● on the spine of the book. After reading an AR book, the
student goes to the computer (in their classroom or the media center) and
takes a multiple-choice comprehension test on the book's content.
Tests may have 5, 10, or 20 items, depending on the length and difficulty
of the book. The computer scores the test, awards the student points
based on the results, and keeps a complete record. Teachers may
use the AR program to monitor reading level and comprehension
skills. Please note that there are many terrific books in
the Claxton Library that are not on the AR list; plus there are other
methods used by our teachers to monitor reading level and comprehension.
Please check with your teacher to understand the importance of reading
from the AR list for their class.

Public Library
Tip!
Several of the local public
libraries have the Claxton AR book list on hand to assist students in
selecting books. In addition, you may want to use the Greensboro
Public Library Online Catalog System to search and request a book.
When you request a book, the public library system will automatically leave
you a voicemail when the book is available at your desired branch.
Access the Online Catalog from Greensboro Public Library website at www.greensborolibrary.org.
