Beginning August 29, 2011 and Ending May 31, 2012

Claxton Elementary

2011-2012

Dear Claxton Parents/Guardians:

We all want to work together to encourage all children to become successful readers.  To do that, we are asking that you work with your child this year to set aside daily reading time.  Please initial and date the reading log provided daily.   When your child has completed 20 days of reading, return it to your child’s teacher and a new log will be sent home.   If your child completes and turns in two logs in a quarter, s/he will be invited to participate in the Quarterly Reading Celebrations. The logs for each quarter should be turned in by October 27, January 19, March 23 and May 31.  We will accept the logs as they are completed.

The Quarterly Reading Celebrations will go along with the PTA focus on fitness. The celebrations which are tentatively scheduled for November 4, January 27, March 30 and June 1 will have a “fitness” theme.   Throughout the year, classes will log the number of sheets returned. The students have been challenged by Ms. Burgman, Claxton’s principal, to turn in their log sheets and she will participate in a certain number of Field Day Activities.  Based on the number of sheets tallied for the year, Ms. Burgman will join the students in field day activities scheduled for the first week of June.

3,000 sheets:               Ms. Burgman will do 3 activities

4,000 sheets:               Ms. Burgman will do 4 activities

5,000 sheets:               Ms. Burgman will do 5 activities

6,000+ sheets:             Ms. Burgman will do 6 activities

Help your child meet the challenge!  What do you need to do?

  • Encourage your child to read daily (K-1 at least 15 minutes; 2nd & 3rd at least 20 minutes; 4th & 5th at least 30 minutes).
  • Sign and date the form daily.
  • Remind your child to turn completed forms in and collect a new form from the teacher.
  • Model reading for your child.

By supporting daily reading at home, children will:

  • Become better readers
  • Become more informed
  • Become more successful in school

Thanks for all you do!
